Welcome and thank you for visiting my site. I am an artist living and working in London.
Much of my current work is concerned with paintings and drawings of landscapes and cityscapes. These works are derived from photographs. Often a single photograph generates a series of Expressionist-styled works of the same scene. These works verge upon abstraction. Successive works in the series develop common compositional structures through repetition of gestures with brushes, pencils and other implements. The often spontaneous and intuitive engagement with materials, tools, surfaces and processes stands in contrast to the momentary capture of the photograph. These series are open-ended and no particular work from a series is the definitive example. Through repetition works in a series no longer represent the landscape or cityscape but instead signify it.
I also make a related series of abstract works that evoke landscapes through the suggestion of a horizon line or, by tipping the plane through 90 degrees, the view down upon a landscape in aerial and satellite photography. These works use many of the same techniques, processes and materials for creating images as employed in my landscapes and cityscapes. Sometimes these abstract works evolve out of failed landscapes and cityscapes.
In recent years I have also made many geometric abstract collages that explore colour and tonal relationships using different kinds of found and painted papers.
I have a blog at simonneville.blogspot.com which combines my artwork and photography from my Flickr account.
